VAT Registration in the UAE

Complete VAT registration with accurate documentation and timely submission — protecting your business from penalties and delays.

VAT registration in the UAE is mandatory once your taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous twelve months, or are expected to exceed that figure in the next thirty days. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500.

The registration itself is not difficult. What catches businesses out is the evidence: the Federal Tax Authority expects turnover to be substantiated with contracts, invoices, bank statements and customs documentation, and an application submitted without them stalls or is rejected.

We assess whether you are actually required to register, assemble the supporting file properly the first time, and set you up so that periodic returns are a routine task rather than a scramble.

VAT Registration — frequently asked

What is the VAT registration threshold in the UAE?
Registration is mandatory when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the previous twelve months, or when you expect to exceed that figure within the next thirty days. Voluntary registration is permitted once taxable supplies or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500.
What is the penalty for late VAT registration?
The Federal Tax Authority imposes an administrative penalty for failing to register within the required timeframe, and separate penalties accrue for late filing and late payment of any VAT due from the date registration should have taken effect. Registering late therefore usually costs considerably more than the headline penalty. If you believe you have already passed the threshold, treat it as urgent.
How long does UAE VAT registration take?
Where the supporting documents are complete and consistent, the FTA typically issues a TRN within about 20 business days. Incomplete turnover evidence is the most common cause of delay, which is why we assemble the file before submitting rather than after a rejection.
Do free zone companies need to register for VAT?
Yes. Free zone companies are subject to the same registration thresholds as mainland companies. A small number of areas are treated as designated zones, where supplies of goods within the zone may fall outside the scope of VAT — but this is activity-specific and frequently misunderstood. We confirm your position rather than assume it.
How often must VAT returns be filed?
Most businesses file quarterly. Larger businesses, generally those with annual turnover above AED 150 million, are assigned monthly periods. Your filing frequency is set by the FTA and shown on your registration certificate.
